CSW59: overwhelming and fantastic

My first CSW, and what an amazing experience it is. Being a specialist on LGBTI issues, as a generalist on women’s rights up till now so little I have been aware of the huge variety and levels of struggles women in general have to go through, to obtain something so logical, equality. Equal human rights.

In fact I’m quite overwhelmed by all the things I hear and see and do lots of thinking trying to grasp the impact of the problems I’ve been made aware of this week.

So many people and as many opinions. Attitudes and opinions which up until now I would have shrugged off and labelled as ‘mental’, I now realize, just can’t be ignored. There are SO MANY people here with narrow minded interpretations on human rights. At first I was pleasantly surprised by seeing loads of young, polite, neatly dressed people attending the parallel and side events. Unfortunately they uphold some strong beliefs. From what I’ve heard religious groups pay for their travels to New York and instruct them on how and where to ‘infiltrate’ and ask questions like: “I totally respect people with another sexual orientation, but, and I mean this in the most respectful way, why do they choose to be gay?” The same sort of questions are asked regarding women and pregnancy as well as protection of ‘the family’.

But then there are so many wonderful panellists, like Monica Simpson, executive director of Sister Song speaking at a dialogue event on “Religious and Sexual rights at the United Nations”. Eloquently countering the pro life activists, she argues that what is needed, is good health care. For women. Whether it is because they would like to be with child, or whether they want to end a pregnancy. When health care is made available to these women, a man that breaks his leg can benefit as well. Women have the right to self  determination. Whose life is worth more, that of the pregnant woman or the foetus she is carrying, that is only for the woman carrying the foetus to decide.

I hear of so many beautiful things happening, as with the official LBTI event instigated by the Dutch ministry of Emancipation (OCW). Like how swift the rights and thus the lifes for LGBT people in Malta are changing for the better. Also Malta has ‘ground breaking legislation’ regarding intersex people.

Besides being overwhelmed I find I’m starting to distil the main subjects for my speech at the general assembly in October. I will touch on the ordeals of the safety of women’s rights activists, activists who speak about their own sexuality or sexuality and sexual diversity in general in explicit terminology, about family and its many varieties, about self determination and the integrity of the human body.

In the meantime the NGO’s have felt they were excluded from the negotiations on the CSW59 declaration, whereas the negotiations on the one topic that was left for negotiation, the working strategies, appear to be quite a difficult proces.

As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: “Bread and roses! Bread and roses!”

Up to 10 or even 20.000 attendants, was the amount the organizers estimated beforehand. Since this was a first, I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw that they were right. Never before I attended a women’s rights march, and it was a wonderful experience. The march was attended not only by women, but loads of men joined, which felt so right. Many young people showed up. However, apart from the warm feeling of solidarity unfortunately there are many and far more urgent reasons why one would want to be part of it. I spoke shortly with the sparkling Ruby on why she was there.

For the international Women’s Caucus, the reason to attend was an obvious one. The outcome of the declaration of the CSW59 is very disappointing to the NGO’s who over the last year put in lots of effort to get ‘our’ voices heard and the final version of the declaration appears to be, as the Guardian writes today a ‘major step backwards for women’s rights‘.

I admire all those women (organizations) world wide, defenders of our human rights, extensively. I attended the march, joining the LBTI Caucus in the parade, to express my solidarity with all of them.

Kerst en ik – column uitgesproken bij Pink Christmas Kerkdienst

De paus maakt me zo boos en verdrietig! Voor wie het niet heeft meegekregen, het COC verwoordde het heel goed in haar persbericht:

“Paus Benedictus XVI stelde vrijdag tijdens zijn jaarlijkse kersttoespraak voor medewerkers van het Vaticaan dat homo’s de rol die God hen heeft gegeven, manipuleren en dat ze daarmee ‘de essentie van het menselijk wezen’ vernietigen. Het is de tweede keer in een week tijd dat de paus zich uitspreekt tegen homoseksualiteit en de openstelling van het burgerlijk huwelijk. In een recente toespraak zei de kerkvorst dat het homohuwelijk een bedreiging is voor de wereldvrede, net als abortus en euthanasie.”

Maar dat is nog niet alles. 12 december zegende hij Rebecca Kadaga, een Oegandees parlementslid dat in november ‘als kerstcadeautje’ de in de volksmond genoemde ‘Kill the Gays Bill” – het wetsvoorstel ‘Dood aan de homoseksuelen’ aan het volk wilde schenken. Hoe strookt dit met de bijbelse oproep ‘elkaar lief te hebben’? Met ‘Wat gij niet wilt dat u geschiedt, doe dat ook een ander niet?’ Wat voor kerstcadeau is dit?

Een kerstcadeau hoef ik sowieso niet. Call me old fashioned, maar cadeautjes horen voor mij bij Sinterklaas. Kerst is sinds mijn vroegste vroeger het feest van de geboorte van een bijzonder kind, van Jezus.  Hierbij hoorde de voorpret van het neerzetten van de kerststal met onze prachtige kerstgroep met als slotstuk het in de kribbe leggen van de kleine Jezus. Daarnaast was er het feest van het kopen van de goedkoopste én mooiste kerstboom en deze optuigen met een bonte verzameling aan glazen kerstballen en gekleurde lichtjes. En vervolgens de kerstdagen met familie doorbrengen, met jokeren en rummikub en onder toezicht van mijn vader spelen met de brandende kaarsen. En als we als kinderen onderling ruzie kregen tijdens kerst en elkaar verwensingen toeriepen, was er steevast wel één van de vijf die riep: “Is dit nou je kerstgedachte!” Waarna we in goede harmonie het feest voortzetten.

Kerst was opblijven voor de nachtmis en vanaf mijn tienertijd met mijn vader naar de binnenstad voor de nachtmis in de katholieke kerk van zijn jeugd, de sinds 1974 oecumenische Duif, waar iedereen welkom is en waar we Jos Brink gloedvol hoorden en zagen preken. En bij thuiskomst een door mijn moeder gebakken snee kerstbrood met roomboter eten met een kop thee of warme chocomel en elkaar een zalig kerstfeest wensen.

Kerst staat voor het gros van de mensen, gelovig of niet, voor liefde, hoop op vrede, licht, verbinding. Het gevoel van kerst startte in 2012 voor mij dit najaar al, met het kamp aan de Notweg, om de hoek van waar ik ben opgegroeid, waar uitgeprocedeerde vluchtelingen een stem gaven aan hun onmogelijke situatie en waar vele mensen die zich betrokken voelden, zorgden voor fatsoenlijke tenten, dekens, eten en wat al niet meer zij. En toen het kamp werd opgebroken, kwam er licht in de duisternis met de Vluchtkerk, dankzij de samenwerking tussen de uitgeprocedeerden, de protestantse kerk, het Studenten kraak spreekuur, een Amsterdamse projectontwikkelaar en burgers uit allerlei lagen, cultuurs- en geloofsachtergronden. Uit naastenliefde. Om mens voor een mens te zijn. Positief, daadkrachtig en hoopvol.

En daar kan Benedictus nog heel wat van leren. Met de haat die hij de wereld instrooit, zou ik hem liefst met vileine woorden fileren door hem met zijn eigen boek om de oren te slaan. Maar wat gij niet wilt dat u geschiedt… Dus ik volsta hier met een “Hé, Ben, is dit nou je kerstgedachte!?’.

Voor de kerstgedachte hebben we, gelovig of niet, een paus niet nodig. Als er een god is, en als hij ergens is, dan is het in De Vluchtkerk. En hier, vanwege hoe we hier samen zijn, op de 4e adventszondag in de Keizersgrachtkerk, van devoten tot ongelovige Thomassen als ik. Dit raakt voor mij de essentie van kerst. En ik geniet ervan dat we die met elkaar hier kunnen en mogen delen.

FNV Vrouwendag bij de Vakcentrale 2008

  In 2008 organiseerde ik met Riëlle Beekmans, Annalily van den Broeke en Pauline Fokkelmans een inspirerende vrouwendag bij de Vakcentrale FNV. Mooie tijden!

4-3-2008 FNV pakt 8 maart internationale vrouwendag groots aan

Met o.a. bijdragen van FNV-voorzitter Agnes Jongerius en federatiebestuurder Wilna Wind. De FNV houdt op 8 maart een feestelijke Vrouwendag. Met workshops, debatten, presentaties en ontmoetingen.

De thema’s: inspiratie in je werk, balans houden in je leven, et cetera. Deze dag is van en voor FNV Vrouwen. Alle onderdelen op deze dag worden verzorgd door FNV-leden of werknemers van de FNV. De organisatie is een samenwerkingsproject van de vakcentrale FNV en ABVAKABO FNV, FNV Kiem, FNV ZBo en FNV Zelfstandigen in Diensten, Groen, ICt, Handel, Industie en Zorg.

Het programma start 8 maart om 10.00 uur en eindigt rond 17.30 uur. Locatie is het kantoorgebouw van de FNV vakcentrale (naritaweg 10), vlakbij de station Sloterdijk.
